Addiction Medicine Physician

Fewer than 2,500 physicians in the United States have a specialization in addiction medicine.

Addiction medicine specialists are physicians (MDs or Dos) who have graduated from medical school and completed residency in a primary medical specialty, such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery or Emergency Medicine.

In addition to their experience in their primary medical specialty, they have additional training and clinical expertise in the field of Addiction Medicine.

Individuals or family members living with substance use disorders can benefit from a doctor who holds this specialization. Addiction medicine physicians provide prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for patients with unhealthy substance use or substance-related health conditions.

Additionally these physicians also help family members affected by a loved one's substance use or addiction.
