Contract Redlines: When "Self-Help" Becomes "Self-Harm"
It has been brought to my attention that a reminder may be needed about individual actions and mobilization efforts.
I want to be very clear about this, because it matters for the protection of every Flight Attendant. Calls for coordinated action that interfere with work duties, including encouraging members to stop performing assigned job functions are not something the Union can endorse, encourage, or facilitate. That kind of activity can expose individual Flight Attendants to discipline and exposes the Union to significant legal risk.
Strategic leverage, economic pressure, and bargaining power are collective tools that must be exercised through lawful, organized processes led by elected union leadership, not through informal calls to action on social media. Anything else is not only ineffective, it can be harmful to the very members it claims to protect.
Engagement and accountability absolutely matter. But engagement does not mean bypassing the Union’s structure, and accountability does not mean encouraging unilateral “self-help” actions that place members at risk.
Real leverage is built through coordinated strategy, legal protections, and disciplined execution, not individual decisions made flight by flight.
If members have ideas, concerns, or proposals about bargaining strategy or leverage, those should be raised through Local Officers who will then bring these forward to the MEC, where they can be evaluated responsibly and safely. That is how we protect the membership while advancing our collective interests.
