Substance use alters the brain’s structure and function, leading to changes in the same areas affected by mental health conditions such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. Many individuals with mental health disorders turn to alcohol or drugs as a means of self-medication, attempting to alleviate emotional distress.
While one condition does not directly cause the other, their coexistence can intensify symptoms, making it more challenging to manage either disorder independently.
Research indicates that the most effective approach to treatment is an integrated treatment plan, which simultaneously addresses both conditions. This approach, involving coordinated care from medical professionals and counselors, leads to improved outcomes and long-term recovery.
