Understanding Post Holiday Blues

Understanding Post-Holiday Blues

View as Webpage

Post holiday “blues” usually refer to short-lived distress, anxiety, and sadness that arises after the holidays. For Flight Attendants, the days between Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day often prove to be a difficult challenge as one juggles between work demands and personal/family expectations.

So what do the “post-holiday” blues feel like? Some describe the feeling as similar to the ending of a well-earned vacation where the brain now needs to shift to restore balance. For many, this will happen quickly, but for others, the shift to restore emotional balance takes time and might require professional support.

If you feel that you are emotionally dragging, consider the following:

  • Take time for yourself! Sleep and restart your exercise routine. Cut down on sugary treats. Stay away from alcohol and get back into healthy eating habits.
  • Be patient with yourself, but, if you cannot shake the “blues,” seek professional guidance. Call the Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program to have a confidential conversation with a Flight Attendant peer to assist you in finding resources in your area.
