Spotlight: MEC Food & Beverage Committee Chairperson

This is the fourth in a series of Committee Chair Profiles. Your AFA MEC is accepting applications for the Food &Beverage Committee Chair position.  

This position serves as the vital link between Flight Attendants and inflight management regarding everything served in the cabin. This role is dedicated to ensuring that service procedures are practical, safe, and represent the best interests of the crew.

Key Responsibilities

  • Management Liaison: Meets with management to discuss any changes in service or procedures before they are implemented.
  • Operational Advocacy: Collaborates with the Scheduling and Safety committees to ensure that service requirements are realistic given projected service time(s) and passenger loads.
  • Member Representation: Acts as a primary advocate when management’s service goals conflict with the safety or workload of the Flight Attendants.
  • Strategic Communication: Reports directly to the MEC, keeping the union leadership informed of all Inflight Department developments.

Qualifications & Scope

The Chairperson must possess a comprehensive, working knowledge of cabin service procedures and the ability to represent the union professionally during joint Union-Company briefings. Their goal is to ensure that every service change is vetted for its impact on the crew's ability to maintain a safe and efficient cabin environment.


Did you know?

If management attempts to implement a service change over the committee’s objections, the Chairperson is authorized to escalate the matter immediately to the MEC President to protect the interests of the membership.
