How to Safely Dispose of Unused or Expired Medications

View as WebpageUnused or expired medications can pose unintentional dangers to you, children, pets and others who may have access to them. Consider taking an inventory of the medications you may have at home or in your travel bag(s). Below are ways to dispose of unused or expired medications.

The best option is to find a drug take back location-Year Round Drop off Location

If you do not have a take back location, check the FDA’s Flush list to see if your medicine is on the list-FDA Flush List

Medicines on the “Flush List” may be especially dangerous (even with just one dose) if taken by children, pets, or others in your home.

If your medicine is not on the Flush List, you can safely dispose of the medication in the trash. The FDA does recommend that when you dispose your medications in the trash, you place the pills in coffee grounds, dirt, or cat litter, making the unused pills very unappealing. DON’T CRUSH PILLS.  You can place this entire mixture into a well-sealed bag before disposing in your trash.

Remember, when disposing of prescription bottles, scratch out all personal information on the bottle.
